Computer virus?

Hi

My cousin is having problems with her computer and I am wondering if she has got a virus on her computer. She has no longer got MS Word & Paint, she has got broadband but the pages are taking soooo long to load I think she is on up to 8 Meg. At the beginning when she starts her computer she has a window that pops up saying User Enviroment - please contact the administrator. Generally she is saying that her computer is running really slow and she can't save anything, just sample pictures. Her computer is about 4 years old. Is this the signs of a virus that is on her computer? It doesn't let her keep her anti-virus up to date either.

Many thanks

If it doesn't let her keep her anti-virus up to date either then try scanning for Viruses with this online...

Also try running spyware scans because they can cause system slow down.

Although if it hasnt had windows reinstaled in over 4 years it might have alot of corrupt files which can cause problems.

If anything ive said here doesnt help you then hopefully someone else will reply with a little more help.

Reformat the hard drive. If she does not have a virus and spywear program that she uses regularly (obviously she does not) then I am sure there is already been a lot of damage done to the Windows and program files.

I reformat my hard drive every three months and I use anti spywear / adware / virus protection regularly. So that’s just how it goes.

Also if she has never reformatted the hard drive then she is LONG over due. Microsoft recommends you reinstall Windows once a year. I do it about 3x more often then that.

Thanks for your help guys, I managed to get my nextdoor neighbour to have a look at it and he has solved a few things - not sure what but he said that it needed more memory and a new graphics card. Thanks again!
