Check disk management to see if it detects it. May need to assign it a drive letter before windows will see it.

I didn't say go to my computer. I said go to disk management which is totally different. Right click on computer, click on manage, click on disk management on left. See if the drive shows up.

is there a way to copy program files over from one computer to the other if i dont have the install disks?

I'm no whiz with these things (in fact, John has helped me with soooo much stuff), and this is going to sound as stupid as it gets, but shutdown, then unplug from the wall. Re-plug and start 'er up again.

I know, I know! But I was having the same problems a few years ago, and someone suggested doing just that...........and it works! My USB ports are recognized, and I'm off and running again.

just sayin'.............

Just go to the freaking disk management! You may have to initialize the drive.

Right click My Computer | Manage | Storage | Disk management.

thanks all.....turns out the usb ports themselves were faulty, i had to prop a book under the usb drive to hold it up so it would stay connected
