Computer will not start???

I'm posting this for my Dad. When he pushes the power button on his computer it doesn't start. Once and a while he will hear the speakers pop but thats it. No beep codes, nothing. I figured it was the power supply so I had him change it with one he had laying around but it still does the same thing. Anyone have any ideas?

When the system is powered on do the lights on the drives come on at all as if the post tests were starting? Was the four wire plug cinnected for the new style of 12v feed direct to the cpu? With two different working supplies being tried you could be looking at either a failed cpu or dead main board. The rare sound through the speakers shows that current is going through the board to some degree. He could try a spare cpu if one is available.

No lights come on. I asked about the four prong connector next to the CPU but he says that it doesn't have one. I know exactly what your talking about but he says that he doesn't have it on his board/PSU. It's an AMD Athalon 2500 and a foxconn MB. If it's the MB it's still on warrenty from newegg.com. Thanks for your help.

OK So it's an older Socket A model there. When you need assistance like this on a system other than what is in your signature the make, model, and a few other things are often needed. If he had another Atholon to throw in to see if it came up that would point right at the 2500. How old was the cpu when the case was assembled? Was it bought about the same time or from an earlier build?

The speakers pop? I assume the speakers connected to it and not the PC speaker? It almost sounds like a dead motherboard... It's not totally uncommon for them to give out after a few years. But still, lets not jump to conclusions.

Sorry about not posting that. I threw it together with some parts I had around. The processor, video card and the RAM was old, I just picked up a new MB and HD and put it together for him. I got the MB in December so it's not that old but as we all know this kind of stuff just goes out. He's been complaiing that his computer will shut off at random and restart. He said it usually happens when something blows up in BF. He also said that he has had some trouble with his onboard sound and ethernet so I'm starting to think it's a MB issue. I'll be up there in a week and I'll bring an old CPU with me to test it. Thanks for your help.

You never know. It could be some of those old parts not the board? Along with the cpu see if you have some good memory lying around as well as a spare supply.
