I just built my first computer. I tried to install windows xp from a dell cd. Windows did not install. For some reason now the computer does not boot up. I treied downloading windows online and burning it onto cd to try again but that also does not work. what can I do to boot the computer up??

Sounds like it might be something with your graphic card... I had the same problem with mine when my graphics care went out... do you have onboard video on, or another card you can try?

i used some card from an old computer. maybe ill go buy a graphic card and see if it will work or use one from my other computer.

my x300 used to do this cause it was on it's way out

i'd have to restart the computer 2 or 3 times to get it to boot up completely, the rest of the time, it would just go to a black screen

correct me if I'm wrong, but don't those dell install cd's work only on the computer they come with?

I think the newer ones do, but I use to use an older Dell XP CD for all kinds of computers without a problem. If it's one that only works on certain computers, it won't let you install anything, so thats not his problem.

I've used Dell XP CDs to install Windows before, so I know that does work. As for your problem, I have had it several times in my earlier builds. Once it was the video card, like someone mentioned before. However, might I suggest you investigate your power supply. This is cause for many boot up problems. Still, if you think it is software based, try installing something much simpler, say, Windows 98 (make sure its genuine). If that still doesn't work then I suggest that your hard drive could be faulty.
