Computer won't assign drive letter, external

Mmk, I know what you're thinking "right-click on my Computer..." and so on to assign a letter, tried that, and its not in the list to do so, I'll start from the beginning.
When I plug my External HDD, the status lights start blinking and the discs start spinning also computer finds the HDD...sort of, it lists the device in the "safely remove hardware" list, but nowhere else. I tried re-installing the drivers for the device, that works sometimes, but usually I just have to restart the device a few times. its a semi-old HDD, and it sounds like age is taking is toll on it, but I wanted a second opinion.
I'm sure this in not relevant, but I'll post it anyway.
Seagate Barracuda 40gb 3.5"

Any help is appreciated!

The device manager does read that there is a drive connected, however it does not know any details about the device.
If/when I can access it again I plan on backing it up and formatting. It usually works after a reset it a few times, so its not completely screwed, I wanted to cover my bases.

well I've tried for the last 30mins to get it to read on any of my computers and no dice...guess I'm fricked.

EDIT: I just hooked it up as slave and it reads fine....so I'm thinking faulty enclosure.

EDIT2: I reformatted it and its working fine now, I will start backing it up now lol. Thanks for the insight, all.
