Got a new Systemax Venture micro ATX w/ p4 3.04 GHZ 512 ram...etc etc...

Anyway, When I try to start it up it freezes in the BIOS splash screen and won't boot any further...

If I leave it turned off for a while and try again, it boots sometimes as far as to the Windows XP splash screen and then freezes and sometimes get just barely past BIOS and freezes...

I tried booting an OS from a live CD with no luck...same thing...keeps freezing...

Is this a motherboard or hard drive problem?

if your feazing durring your bios, your not getting far enough into your POST for the hard drive to have any effect. Remove all pci cards, all but one stick of ram, videocards(if you have an onboard) and anything else you have connected to the board and see if you get a consistant boot result (either good or bad).

if you get all bad then you know its the motherboard, if its all good you know its something you removed. Put everything back one peice at a time till you start getting erros and you know whats doing it.

If you get random results still, there must be something wrong with the mobo or CPU, try changing one if you can see what it does.

another thing is to check to make sure the CPU interface pins are all aright, ive encounted one pc that had a slight bend in a pin in a socket 775 system and it caused a similar problem.

Hope it helps

Power Supply or heat issue.

why would you say that?? Seems like Bios Error meaning its mostlikly a motherboard problem. Tho like zabador stated it could be other hard ware..

So were do you get PSU or Heat issue?

have a look on the manufacturer's site and check what your cpu is supposed to run at voltage wise. this was the same problem as i had when i first built my computer. although you dont have the same cpu/mobo as me, your problem sounds very familiar.

if this is the problem you will need to up the voltages in the bios for your cpu. default is auto and sometimes needs to be jacked up a little.

when i had to change mine it keep freezin just as i got into the voltages menu in the bios. give it time and you will make it in there to change. do it as quick as possible and press F10 asap after you have changed it.

hope this all helps ya out,
