My dads PC has suddenly developed a problem.

The PC wont boot up, the power light comes on but nothing else happens, I have had the back off to check the connections and they look fine, swapped the power cables over and they seem to work but it just will not boot.

Any suggestions ?

You might want to check the 4 or 6pin CPU power cable.

This is the lead from the power supply unit (PSU)

This is where it should go on the motherboard (somewhat)

There are two things you can look for. If the computer any of the hardware has gone bad, it may beep when it tries to boot. If so, you can count the beeps, and look up the beep codes to see what the problem is. Also, you can check to see if it is getting power and the power supply is good. There is usually a light on the back of the computer to show the power supply is working and getting power. Check to see if it is on and if the fan is running.

This is the best place to start. Post back and let us know.

Cheers for the advice.

When you press the power button on the tower the power light comes on but nothing happens, so the power would appear to be good.

Could the motherboard be shot ?

As I say its not a new computer, but it suddenly developed this problem.

Without the beep codes, it is very difficult to say. Could be the motherboard, hard drive, RAM, or maybe just a software problem. The only other thing I can tell you to check is to see if the fan is running. Should be able to see it through the back of the case. If not, pretty good chance you have overheated and fried something. Either way, you may want to find a repair shop to check it out. If it can be fixed, since it's an older desktop, it shouldn't be terribly expensive, and if it can't be fixed cheaply, they can probably recover your files and then buy the computer for parts.

Hope this helps,

do the fans spin? are the fans plugged in to the motherboard or the power supply?

regarding the above post, software problems or hard drive problems would not cause a computer to not get video...
