Computer won't boot up....

Hello all, I'm new to the forums.....

I've got an A-Open computer that recently stop booting up.....I noticed in the last couple of weeks of it's life that when I turned it on, the fan noise seemed to be really slow to get up to speed. Did that for about 2 weeks. Now when I turn it on, the fan makes a weird kind of winding sound, the green light comes on on the front of the CPU, but that's as far as it gets....The monitor is blank.

I took it apart to check the power supply b/c we had some bad storms around that time and I thought it might have had lightning run in on it. The power supply has one part (not sure what it's called) that looks like it was melted.

Could this be a power supply problem, motherboard, or hard drive problem?

Thanks for any help.....

If the Power supply is melted the first thing you should do is replace that. Once you have replaced that try it again and if it doesn't work then it must have damaged something else aswell.

Thanks. I'm suspecting it is the power supply...It's just one small part that looks like the outer cover is melted. I didn't smell the normal smell that comes from a burnt up power supply though, if you know the smell I'm referring too. That electrical smell, don't know how to describe it....

I'll most likely replace the power supply first....

Okay, I'll try to remember to take a photo of it tonight and upload it tomorrow...

Thanks for the input.....

Thought I'd let you all know it was the power supply. I ran across a power supply here at work that was taken out of another computer. Took it home, hooked it up, and the computer works perfect now....
