Ok so a couple weeks ago i built a new rig.

i7-4790k
asus z97-ar
8 gb ram
256 gb mx100 ssd

Computer has been running fine for 3 weeks. Was playing games last night, turned the computer off. Went to go turn it on 2 hours ago and nothing!

took off the side panel and turned the psu off and on. hit power and i hear a slight whistle, the case fan turns about 1/8th rotation and stops.

Did the jumper test on the psu and it passed, the fan on the psu and the case fan were spinning.

did some googling and started removing items and plugs one by one and trying to turn it on.

long story short with everything plugged in EXCEPT the 8 pin cpu cable the fans and everything will run.

when i plug in the 8 pin connector it goes back to the single whistle and nothing.

I was using windows 10 tech preview and the only thing new i did yesterday was update to the latest version.

If i leave the 8 pin connector disconnected and check voltage with a meter i get 12v on all 4 pairs.

Any idea's?

Whats the make and model of power supply? You try resetting the cmos? You install the standoffs in the correct places?

it a corsair cx600

I built the computer at work and the jumpers are in the box there.

standoffs are in the right place and i checked the back, cant see any place possible for it to be shorting against the case.

To reset the cmos do the following. Reconnect the 8 pin cpu power connection.

Unplug power from power supply, remove cmos battery from motherboard, press and hold power switch on case for 10 seconds then wait 10 minutes. Then reinsert battery and reconnect power and try booting up.

Will do this now and report back. Thanks

did as you said and still the same experience. slight whistle fan wants to start but it all stops.

not sure if this helps any but once the whistle noise is made i have to actually turn off the psu and back on again to get any response.

So it sounds like the whistle is coming from the power supply. I would try using a different power supply to see if the pc powers up. You may want to build the pc outside of the case on a piece of cardboard just to make sure its not shorting on anything.

Little update:

Brought the mobo to microcenter and they replaced it. Get home install the new mobo and turned it on. LEDS lit up in sequence and then the cpu led on the mobo stayed red and won't post. so it seems like the mobo was the problem. However now I have a new problem.

Faulty cpu now?

Could a mobo go bad and damage the cpu?
