Okay Today my cousin was complaining his 5 year old computer was giving him madd slow downs... 5(3) years... so we went to circuit city, and i bought him a 512mb DDR Ram+ his 256, I got him a GeForce 6200le 256, and a Pci fan, now i hooked everything up properly, and when i clicked the power button nothing happened at all, it would power on or even light up and restart... but i touched the rim of the case but maybe not enough did i shock the Motherboard?? or it maybe that his 170W PSU is just too weak... any help?? he also has two drive, a sound card, and three fans... and a intel ?? @ 2.0ghz...

Besides dust and debris and the more likely need to see a new battery on the board itself as well as perhaps a newer larger hard drive the new memory may be a problem if that is actually a 5yr. old type system. Some system specifications will show what it uses for memory. The 170w supply sounds real "old" like the system runs PC100 or PC133 memory not DDR or the board requires single sided not dual sided DDR memory.

but the problem goes further, i can't power the computer on wether i try to remove all the addins there was before.... i left it stock, with just the old ram, and the soundcard it came wi/ and it's not turning on or powering on...

Any loose connections? Did you flip the rear PSU switch by accident? Wiggle the PSU wire too. Those can get a bit loose at times.

If the battery was simply weak and went from age or the supply let go you generally wouldn't see anything on an older system. What model is the old system there if prebuilt. A look at the specifications might help.

Perhaps the power supply has gone? Go back to basics and re-connect everything and try to power it on again.Don't forget that there are also components like the front panel connectors that will not allow your pc to switch on if they are not connected.

whats the problem i do not think as the system is too old anything can be wrong with it. ur system needs a thorugh check up before any comment.

alright tomorrow i'll be passing by his house again... were planning on buying a new PSU anyways cause 170W just isn't enought, but what else should i try befor concluding it's a motherboard problem???

Apparently you missed out on seeing brand new boards quit in a few days if they run at all. Any used system can see a hardware fail at any given time. The idea to isolate the problem to see if that is what happened like the supply giving out or some problem on the board if all connections are found good.

The information as to make and model system will show whether or not you can simply go out and buy any supply. Older prebuilds like Dells in particular saw a non standard bolt pattern for mounting the supplies in their older AT type cases. You "had to" buy a replacement through them only. Old case with small supplies often won't have the room for any newer atx type to begin with. A 170w supply is physically small in size even when compared to a 300-350w atx type.
