Computer won't switch on

Yesterday I plugged a friend's MP3 player into the USB socket on my computer and the whole computer just switched off. Now it won't switch on. I've tried changing the fuse in the plug but it makes no difference. The light on the screen lights up though. What's wrong? A friend told me it may be the powerpack which is broken. What's a powerpack? How much is it likely to cost me to have it fixed?

he probably means power supply, and it probably happened because the USB Ports werent conencted properly on the motherboard, this happened to me and fried 2 of my flash drives, but nothing happened to the comp. I would think it would be more of a motherboard issue and not a power supply issue.

that when your friend plugged in his mp3 player into your computer, it messed up the motherboard. And when you say that the light on the monitor light on, what do you mean?

The moniter light stays orange. It usually would go green when the computer starts up but seeing as it's not starting up, the light stays orange. The moniter's only power is from the computer itself so it shows the computer must be getting some kind of power.

Un-plug from the mains, and remove the side from the computer.
Check your manual for the RESET CMOS settings. (Usually JP-1).
Move the jumper from PINS 1-2 to PINS 2-3, or vise versa. This resets the motherboard. (Alternatively, on some systems, you can reset the CMOS by holding down the PAGE-Up/PAGE-down key on the keyboard, while you turn the computer on. Check your manual for this setting).

are any fans spinning inside the computer when u try to power it on?

is the monitor and computer power plugs plugged into the same wall outlet/ surge protector?

Nope no fans start up. The moniter is plugged into the computer and the computer into the surge protector socket. My friend Ian says it is not the power pack.

I don't have a clue what you're taking about!! I don't want to muck it up further by trying to do something scary!!

let me clear this up for you a bit, or try at least:
1. turn off the comp and pull the power plug fromt he back of the computer. then hold the power button down for 5 seconds.
2. now take the side of the computer off so u can see inside.
3. look in ur manual for how to reset the cmos. follow the steps in the manual if u can find it. you may also want to call the computer company u bought it from and they can help you with this step.

I've looked in the manual and I can't find anything that tells me how to reset the CMOS. Is there an internet site I can look on?

Does resetting the CMOS delete the memory? I have 5 years worth of photos which are not backed up at all (stupid me!) on my computer.

we need to know the specs of ur computer before we can tell you how to do something like reset the cmos. get all the specs for the computer and write back and we can help u. :)

I'm not sure what specs you need but I found this on the Packard Bell website by typing in the serial number:

Model: I MEDIA 5068
Chassis: Allegra ATX
Core: Explorer (MS-6511) motherboard
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+ CPU
Hard Drive: HDD Maxtor D540X-4D series

Is this the information needed? I apologise for being impatient, I have exams in 5 and a half weeks and a lot of my revision notes are on my PC (not backed-up) so it's essential I get it fixed pretty soon.

ok, u can pull out the small battery on the motherboard. it looks like a quarter-its a small circular silver battery. before u do this, disconnect the power cables from the comp and make sure to touch the side of the computer case to discharge urself of electricity. after unplugging, hold the power button down for approx. 5 secs. and release it. now pull out the battery and press the power button again for 5 secs. then wait 10 minutes. now touch side of comp again, then put batt back in, then close comp and put power cord back in. try to turn it on and see what happens. good luck. let us know how it goes.

well, i say try again but wait a little longer. unfortunately, im beginnning to think u may have fried the motherboard and it may need to be replaced. follow my steps i posted above 1 more time. make sure u do them in the exact order as above. print this if u need to. otherwise, u may not be resetting the cmos at all. let us know.

ok, the monitor has 2 plugs coming out of the back of it. 1 goes into the computer with a blue plug, and the other goes to a power outlet. and the computer itself has a power cord, its black, and it goes into an outlet too. i need to know if they go into the same surge protector or same wall outlet, or different plugs. also check the wall outlet for a red botton between the outlet hoes that says reset. look for all this and tell me where these things are plugged in.
