Computer won't work to say the least

Well this is what I have done. I built a new computer and the thing locks up. I thought maybe a bad mb or power supply. Exchanged both items and still getting the same problem.

My next problem is can't install windows on hd. It is a western digital. The cd will not load windows. I am trying to install XP. I went into the bios to see if there are any changes I could make and it froze up again. The processor temp is only 26C. I don't think it is a heat issue.

Ok here is what is happening now. I took one stick of memory out and was able to install windows on hd. Then installed all drivers for mb. When I went to start downloading updates for windows it started hanging up. The key board and mouse would quit working. I had this problem to begin with but was not able to load windows because it would do it so frequently. I have replaced the mother board and power supply. So does the problem lye with the memory, powersupply, or motherbord? How do I test each one? Or is there a test? Thanks: MJM
 
You can find some tests on the internet.
Add that stick back in and see if that makes a diffrence.
 
Ok help me out here. Where do I go on the net to find those test? Just now getting into computer building and don't have any resorces for info other than this site.

Yeah, Use Memtest86 to see if it's the RAM. I'd let it run for at least 8 passes. The time it takes to do this will depend on how much Memory you have installed.

Did you say you'd changed the PSU and it didn't help anything? Random lock ups can be a result of bad PSU.
 
Yes I changed psu and mb just to be on safe side. I will do the mem test and let yall know what happens.
 
I have a 400watt power supply. the mb is a biostar P4m890-M7-TE 775 socket. the processor is a intel pentium dual core E2200 2.2 ghz 1mb 800mhz. the memory is OCZ Vista upgrade edition 4096mb pc6400 ddr2 800mh. The operating sys is windows XP sp2. The cpu fan is a masscool socket 775 cpu 3.6 ghz. This is all that is connected to the mother board other than the cd rom. The hd is a 40 gig maxtor 5400 rpm. wait what exactly is operating at 3.6ghz, the processor? if so turn it down and see if anything happens.
 
Well now it won't operate long enough to do the mem test. By the time I get to the web site and try to start to downlowd the test it locks up. I tried removing on stick of mem to see if that would help but it did not. I hate to take this computer apart but I guess I could pull the psu out of it and give it a try. If that don't work then I guess I will return the mem for exchange.
 
You've tried a different PSU? If not, that'd be the first thing to try.

Also, Remove sticks of RAM, see if it'll work with any one of them in on it's own.
 
Well tried another good psu and memory. They came out of this computer and it works fine. I guess I will take the thing all apart and see if I did somthing wrong. Could it be a bad processor. How common is that? Thanks MJM
