Well, I'm looking to set up an FTP server for the family just for sharing files anywhere we go, could also be used to host a website. My mom's company is selling old Pentium IIIs (866 Mhz) with 256 mb ram for approx. 40 USD. Do you think a) The specs are good to host an FTP server to access files from anywhere? 2) If it's a good deal

You don't really need much for an FTP server, that system will be fine, but I'd suggest maybe getting a little more RAM for it if you have the money. Also, $40 is a pretty good price for a system like that. A year and a half ago I spent $45 on a PIII 450MHz with 128MB of RAM.

OK. Ram for what? I mean, if the comp is solely used for an FTP server and maybe a website, why need more than 256 which is already pretty good?

Well what OS are you planning on using? Pretty much all of the most current OS's run pretty slow on 256MB, so I'd recommend upgrading to at least 512MB. However, if you don't want to spend the money, 256MB would be okay.

Okay, well... you should be fine with Linux. My Fedora Core 3 server has 384MB of RAM and that's good enough.

Yeah... I've tried SuSE, Slackware, Debian, and Mandrake, but I like Fedora Core the best. It includes almost all the server daemons you need, and is very flexible and stable.
