Hello, got a small problem... in prompt i type in net view and I see both computers. I also use Synergy which for some reason won't connect the two computers via the computer name (i.e., compMain) but it has to go via the IP.

this is output from net view

\\COMPLAPTOP Livestrong Laptop
\\COMPMAIN MainComputer
The command completed successfully.

The Mac will connect to compMain and can pull with no problem from the iTunes library, as well as having the compMain connect to the Mac's shared files and vice versa. The two windows machines can't seem to get it though...

I have Simple File Sharing disabled on both, both computer are setup for network file sharing. Any ideas?

Their are a few ways to resolve this issue, but the simplest is add the Computer names and matching IP addresses in the host file of all your Computers on the Network, unless you've got a large number of Computers in which case this method becomes unpractical.

Try it and post back.

hmm... thank you for the response, yet I'm afraid that I'm not too good with networking. Where can I find this host file?

This might be the HOSTS file that encryptor is talking about, it is also the only one i know about. It is like a phone book for the computer, when you type in a site, it gets the IP, it checks it again HOST, then it would redirect if there is a site added. Commonly used by security softwares to redirect a user when a 'dangerous' site is typed.

ok wow, that worked! I can now see both computers. Excellent! Thank you!

Yet, I have now 1 more small problem.

My main computer is able to access my laptop's shared directory, how ever, the laptop see's the main computer and the shared directory but it says that i don't have the permissions set.

Now, I checked to see and all the permissions are set correctly on both computers. In other words, the directory that is shared on the laptop and the directory that is shared on the desktop have the same shares and permissions. Yet, when the laptop tries to access the directory it says that the permissions aren't there. So I did i clicked on My Computer > Manage > ... > Users > user > Properties and both users are set up identically.

The error I get is:
C:\Documents and Settings

\\maincomp\shared_folder is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Not enough storage is available to process this command.

Any ideas?

Are all your Computers on the same Workgroup?
