Confused.. Lost many important files

Im just going to explain what happened from the very beginning hoping some of you guys can help..

Laptop.. Dell Inspiron 1440

My laptop came with Vista. I later got an upgrade cd for Windows 7. Installed and worked like a charm. Months later, which was about three days ago now, i got a virus, no idea how. Installed the McAfee cd that came with the laptop and got rid of the virus. Slowly after that things stopped working properly. Dell dock disappeared, couldnt get it to load up when trying. Internet started "Not Responding" almost constantly. And many programs started "Not Responding" periodically.

I got tired of my stuff not being how it used to be and figured I could just pop in the Windows 7 upgrade disk and reinstall hoping everything would go back to normal. That didnt happen.. When I reinstalled I had it wipe the computer of everything, like any and all files, thinking this would help.

So I get back to a fresh wiped hard drive.. Now in start -> programs there is no longer any of the Dell folder's. So no dell dock, or other stuff. When I go to mouse settings, the computer doesnt even recognize the touchpad so i cant change the settings of it.. I feel like ive lost other important files but I havent looked into 'em to much.

So basically all I want to know is how to get back to having all the Dell files and my comp recognizing everything in it..

If any of you understand this giberish and can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

If you still have those cd/dvd come with the laptop, try recover to vista first and then upgrade to windows 7, That is what I would do.
Good luck
Paul

Hi Connnnor,

Follow my steps -
1) Buy Kaspersky Internet Security, first of all
2) I am sure there must be some Dell CD available for all those Dell files you have missed.

I am having a Toshiba laptop and there are three CDs for all the files.

Hope that helps

Is there somewhere that will tell me if I am still missing drivers, John?

And WOW! I cant believe I forgot to check the cd's that came with the computer. What do you know, a drivers and utilities cd. If I pop the cd in will it only install the drivers that I am still missing, or just reinstall them all replacing the ones I already have?

Look in the device manager and if there are still devices that need drivers you'll notice cause you'll see yellow question marks on the items. Usually dell driver cd's doesn't install everything automatically, you would have to click on an item to install it.

I have no yellow question marks so I must be good. Thanks again John, everything seems to be working just fine.
