everyone says that firefox is such a great program and its so fast and easy to use. i ahve been using avant browser lately and i found very fast and easy to use. i recently downloaded mozilla firefox to give it anotehr try and its still kinda slow compared to avant browser and pictures on websites download a lot easier. people say that if u know how to use it and customize firefox right it can be very powerful and fast. so can someone maybe tell me how they did it?

tweak it with about:config, and i'll edit this with some good ones to tweak(put about:config in the adress bar)

wowowowo did that and im clueless. but i have downloaded this skin that makes it look like the safari program and i really like it.

1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

This will make it faster.

Firefox isn't "the fastest browser in the world" on every single computer that uses it, although some members here would lead you to believe this.

If you have tweaked it as much as you want to/can, and it's still considerably more slow than your current browser, then don't use it.

I will tell you though that there isn't a "set" incriment/variable for each of the fields Astroman listed. You have to try different numbers until you get it to run better with your connection. And what Astroman posted is about 1/10th of what I have done to increase the speed in Firefox, and i've probably only done about 1/100th of what I've seen online lol. So don't give up if that's the only thing you've tried.

After all my tweaking, Firefox is very fast...but Opera is still faster with no tweaking at all. I use Firefox still because it blocks EVERY pop-up and banner on webpages. I can't even see the ads on this site anymore since a few days ago when I got a new extension to block ads. Very helpful. That's jsut my computer though.

See? No ads :D Blocks almost everything on ad-ridden websites. Which in turn lets the actual site load faster.

i get wat ur saying. firefox isnt my fastest browser but i love the interface and as u said it blocks every popup so i guess i can see wat people enjoy it. im definitly gonna stick with firefox.

My Internet explorer blocks %99 of popups. I can go for days without seeing one. Also it is plenty fast for me. Although this is a discussion on Firefox I thought I'd toss that in :P.

hehe that's exacly what mine looks like too! :)
i dont think i have tweaked it either, i think firefox is great, i downloaded it to my profile at school lol.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but I have not seen a pop-up in years.. and I use nothing but I.E. (well the google toolbar has block 39 popups in about a year and a half....) Plus, ActiveX controls are not automatically downloaded anymore, you are asked whether or not you want it installed. There ARE situations (many .asp and .aspx pages) where you need them. As long as you know the site and trust it, ActiveX controls can be a good thing.... Also, there is a plug-in for Firefox so you CAN uses ActiveX controls.. why would the mighty anti ActiveX Mozilla company create an ActiveX plug-in if ActiveX is so bad?

Smart web browsing is a part of the equation people forget about.. Best solution is a firewall and antivirus & anti-ad/spy/malware programs.

If someone really wants to hack into your computer your little firefox browser wont stop them.
