Confused...

I have an intel i5 650 3.20 GHz
which is dual core...
so why is this telling me i have quad cores?

You have HT (Hyper-Threading) which uses one core to simulate 2 threads for better performance in most situations...

i3 - Dual Core (without HT, right?)
i5 - Dual Core with HT = 4 threads
i7 - Quad Core with HT = 8 threads
i7 980X - Six-Core with HT = 12 threads
