Hey all,
I have a Compaq 1505, P4 1.7.....basically its junk i have had problems with it from pretty much the day i got it. I am interested in getting a new laptop however i am very confused. Pentium 4, Celeron, Pentium M ect.....and AMD...confuse me. I know i dont want a celeron or another compaq or an HP ive looked at dells and they seem to have decent P4 but low fsb and l2 cach. is front side buss and l2 cach something i need to worry about? I dont really know much about the new mobile processors like M and so on. ive heard good things about toshibas. Im partial to P4 because ive never owned and AMD and have no experience with it......I do not do any gaming on my computer, i use the internet, use word, excel blah blah blah....I have a dell pocket pc that needs to be synced to the computer....and i would like to put programs like autoCAD, Unigraphics, Photoshop, and Catia on it. These programs run fairly well on my Compaq so a new computer shouldnt have a problem running them. any advice on what i should look for would be great thank you.
 
Dell, Toshiba, IBM Thinkpads are some of the best brands.
I would look for the new technology, Centrino processors 1.7Ghz or higher, because they are specifically designed for Laptops, and the battery lasts longer(over 3 hours).
FSB speed is important, and I recommend 533Mhz or higher...
Since you don't play games on the laptop, you don't need an AMD processor (they are better for gaming) and no need for expensive 3D graphics (128MB or higher). I think 64MB of video memory will be sufficient for programs such as autoCAD and other graphic design software.
512MB of RAM is also enough, and it can be upgraded later (simple to install).
I would look for a normal 15" screen, because the wide screens are good for watching DVDs, but not very good for browsing (monitor is wider so the browser contents are located on the left side or in the middle, they cannot fill the whole space)
Most laptops have now integrated CD/DVD writers, which can be useful for storage and copying.
Harddrives: I would recommend at least 60GB.
Ebay has good deals on new laptops, with warranty. That's where you can save $$$
