Hi, I don't know much about computers so I'm askin you guys for help, here's my problem. One night I logged off my account and as soon as I logged in again my computer was extremely slow.:( Then I saw that my it was because my computer usage was constantly 100%. After some experimenting I've discovered that my computer usage only goes up like that when I attempt to open anything that uses a program called explorer.exe or when I try to use internet explorer. I activated my MSN internet service but I still have trouble w/that explorer.exe. Whenever I try to go into my documents, my computer, control panel etc. it shows 100% computer usage. I have no idea what caused this or how to fix it. I can still use other programs like itunes, AIM, and my games. I have a Dell Dimension 8250, 256 RDRAM, 120 GB hard drive, GeForce4 MX 420 w/64 mb video card, and pentium 4 2.53 GHz. And I also really need help!!! :(

Hi Buddy!
Well I am a science graduate and a computer hardware and software engineer too.
You can email ur problems to puneetpal.bedi@mentorix.com
Well u must virus scan your computer as ur computer is always on Internet.
Also you must scandisk ur computer from the Dos Prompt.

I scanned my computer earlier for viruses and it found and disinfected one file and one message. That's done but what do you mean by scandisk ur computer from the Dos Prompt.

I have suggestions:
*(1)Go to Task manager, (2)Go to processes Tab, (3)You should see [CPU] press it, (4)Scroll down to the bottom you should see System idle process with numbers next to that and it says about 90 or more ignore that, (5) If you see anything above System idle process using CPU 90+ then right click it and press end process.
*DO NOT END EXPLORER.EXE RESULTS WILL MAKE WINDOWS BLANK*

(i hope that helped)

Now if that diddn't help try stopping things coming up in your processes, they'll come up in the bottom right corner.
*(1)Goto start, (2)Run, (3)Type MSCONFIG and press enter, (4)click the startup tab, (5)you'll see a heap of things in there disable what you wan't to stop them coming up in your processes.| What you might find is a virus that comes up in your startup, which ive had before so just disable that after you disable what you want it'l ask you to restart, it's up to you if you want to restart or not but when you do and load up windows a message will come up just tick don't ask this again or something and click ok.

(Now if all else fails)

*Download AD-AWARE a good program to remove Spyware and Adaware etc (Update it from the Internet and scan it)

*Update your Anti-virus and scan that.

If all that fails well Defrag, Scandisk, Disk cleanup but just try and fix it.

I hope this at all helps. :)

He means goto windows command prompt and type CHKDSK and it will scan your computer for faults.

Have you updated your Virus software? if not then do it and run the check again. Then download 'Spybot Search & Destroy' from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html which is a free program (although you can donate if you wish to) that scans your computer for Spyware & Adware programs/cookies that can hog your computers resourses and bandwidth. In Spybot run a check/scan of your PC and it will give you a list of any such programs that are running and gives you the option to remove them.
Hope this helps.

Wow thanks for all the quick responses. My problem is fixed thanks to you guys. I think the 'Spybot Search & Destroy' program fixed. Anyways, thanks a lot guys.

I'd be quite impresssed (and dissapointed) if you managed to endtask explorer.exe off a live-boot.

Scandisk and CHKDSK are two different things; CHKDSK is useful but to get to Scandisk, open My Computer, find the drive i question and goto the properties --> tools and it should be there :)

Glad you got it working! :D

Ok i wasnt entirely clear as to what i meant.... i meant "delete explorer.exe" but yeah you can close it down no problem, it will fire up again automatically (or you can manually call it)
