connecting 3 hard drives

i still use regular ide hdd's. i have a 40gig drive as my master drive with windows. then i have a 60 gig slave drive. and i also have a 30 gig drive i am currently only using for troubleshooting purposes. i would like to hook all three of them up to be used at one time
i do not know anything about raid configurations and did not know if that was my only option or what, as i only have the 2 ide controllers on my mbd. the one for the hdd's and then the one for my cdrw and cdr.
i had heard there was some kind of ide cable that would allow me to do this, but i have never actually seen one or know of anywhere to actually get one.

if raid is the only way to go, is there any kind of guide that i could look at that would help me set that up
thank you

Sorry, you cant do RAID with 3 different drives. The drives need to be the same capacity and manufacturer.

just unplug one of your cd drives.. you only need one right? Then the one you unplug, copy the jumper settings for the hd. Raid is not what your looking for..

You can only have 4 IDE devices on your motherboard, so you need to trade a CD Drive for a hard drive. And you dont need to do any kind of raid. Just set the 2 other ones as slaves, and the 40gb as master.

What happened to your computer Trizoy?

spazz31585 - you can always just buy a controller card and keep both optical drives. Most of these cards are advertised as RAID cards - which is why you might be confused about that - but you can use them as regular IDE (parallel) controllers. An example would be this one:

though I am not specifically recommending that one, it's just an example :) As a side note, you will need an empty PCI slot for this to work.

thanks all

i'll give it a shot later on
i didn't know wether either ide controller could support hdd's or if one was designed specifically for dvd/cd drives or something

yeti, do those cards generally run pretty cheap?...i noticed that one was only like $15

Yeah, you can use any IDE controller for any IDE device, just make sure to check the jumper settings (master/slave/cable select).

Most of the basic ones are fairly cheap. When you get into RAID 5 and the like they start getting expensive.
