Connecting DVD Drive and Hard Drive

Got a quick question!

Can you or has anybody connected a DVD drive and hard drive using the same IDE cable? I know you have to make one a master and the other a slave, but does it work?

Has anybody ever done this and if so, did it work ok?

Thank you:rolleyes:

I have never done it but can see no reason why it wouldn't work, the length between the first and second plug may cause an issue though with it being so short and the distance between the hard drive and drive enclosures being so far

Thanks

I can get it to work as far as the length.

This all come about when I ordered a new mobo for a customer. After I ordered it, I realized that it only had one IDE controller and six SATA controllers. Everything in this guys PC is IDE (hard drive and three dvd drives). I just want to get the hard drive and one dvd drive to work for now.

I know you can buy a IDE PCI controller or an adapter, but I'm just trying to cut cost;)

Set it up and boot it up see if it is all found

You have never put a optical drive and a HDD on the same IDE connector before??? How long have you been doing computer repair work and what kind of training do you have? This is a very basic question for a computer tech to be asking. To answear the question yes it works fine. Just be sure to set the HDD as master if it's going to be the boot drive in the system.

Can there be issues worth mentioning? Also, if it is a very old computer, does that make a difference?

No. IDE is IDE whether it is in an old computer or a current one. There are a few versions of IDE that have come along over the years but they all work the same way for cabling.

Yes, IDE is IDE. But harddrives and cd-drives use different protocols. In old days that could cause problems.

Also, cd-drives are pretty slow. So when the bus is shared, it can slow the harddrive down if the cd is used much.

cool

Ok sounds good!

I was just wondering if there was any performance issues?

I ordered this customer a Gigabyte mobo to replace his non working MSI.

I don't know what it is with MSI, but that is the second time I had to replace a MSI mobo. I always thought that they were a good brand:confused:

Make sure the hard drive is connected to the connection on the end, and the DVD to the center connection, and jumpers set correctly....just so you know, SATA hasn't been around forever, and what you are wanting to do was the "only" way to do it in the past....heck, I'd rather spend $20 and buy a SATA DVD, but that is just me, as there is really no benefit for a DVD drive on SATA....but would surely solve your problem and less clutter in your case. As for Mobo going bad, other than an occassional transitor; usually because of a bad PSU or grounded out; ie not installed on brass stand-offs correctly.
