Connecting ethernet cable to WAN port in router?

Hi, I'm moving in to my college dorm soon and apparently there's no wifi but only an ethernet port. Usually a modem is plugged into the WAN port on the router to get internet, but if I plug the ethernet port into the WAN port will I get wifi in my room?

as long as you set your routers local Ip address to be on a different network than the schools.

You'll want to plug it into one of the LAN ports and just leave the WAN port empty. Also, some school have strict policies on the use of routers so they might not let you use it at all.
