Connecting Multiple PCs through WLAN

i want to connect 3 laptops through wlan for these reasons
1. share files among computers
2. play multiplayer games together

i know the laptops need a wireless adaptor (which they all have) and a router, which i am planning to buy. so i think i know what hardware i should have.

i read through on how to set up wlan on websites but theres a problem. i dunno if i could turn my dsl connection into wifi, but that not wut i want. i dont want internet connection in this case. i just want to share files and play multiplayer games.

how would i do this? once i got everything set up, should i go to my dsl modem's homepage and disconnect the internet connection? or is internet connection required for wlan?

Don't worry about the internet connection:

When you're going to set up your Wlan network, you will have one computer as the Host. From this computer, create a network, follow the prompts and it will ask you if you to share internet or not. Your choice.

In winXP: Control Panel->Network setup wizard.

Make sure all the computers in the network are connected to your network and you should be able to share files. You can also share a printer, your choice again in the network setup wizard.

thanks for the info. i havent bought the router yet so im not savy on this subject, but wut u said makes sense to me.

ive seen pics of routers and in the back, there are lan ports. are these ports only there for computers that connect using ethernet?

im planning on being the host. would the other laptops connect to me the same as connecting to a hot spot? would they have to create a new connection?

how would the multiplayer game experience be? would there be any lagging like it was being played online?

i dont think you and webbenji are thinking the same things. what it sound like to me is you want to set up a wireless network for Local area network(LAN) gaming. to start off with, on the back of a wifi router, there is normally an ethernet (thats the internet) in-port, and 4 wired LAN ports. of course you what to go wireless, so you wont need those. now, setting up is normally pretty easy- all you have to do is connect to the wifi router. however, all computers must have the same workgroup in order for all computers to be networked properly. i think XP computers are default set to MSHOME (not sure).

that should get you on your way. my knowledge/memory of networking is limited, so if anyone knows how to explain it better, please do so.

p.s. wireless is much slower than wired, and i do not recommend using wireless for gaming. buy a couple of network cables from newegg.com, you can get em pretty there.

to answer the rest of your questions: internet goes into the ethernet port and is routed to the LAN ports and wirelessly.
all the others have to do is connect to the router.
the lag should be significantly less than online play.

Yeah well that's kinda what I said lol... He doesn't need internet, most Multiplayer games comes with built-in servers. You are right about MSHOME but I think as soon as they connect on the same wireless network, there won't be any problem regarding that.
