connecting my mac to broadband

connecting my mac to broadband (whoops posted twice)

ok, i just bought a mac (MB133X/A) yesterday and i need to connect it to broadband. in my house we have 2 other computers both connected to broadband. one computer is in the spare room in the backyard (this is the computer with modem) and the other is in the main house. at the moment we simply have a cable running from the computer in the spare room to the computer in the house which provides the broadband. now, i need to connect my laptop to that network. what would be the best way of doing this? i dont know a lot about this sort of thing so need help.

Do you want to do wireless?
 
wireless is the best option just because it is relatively cheap and mobile. else you would be stuck with a cord.
 
so if had cord it would be just like the connection between the 2 other computer in my house? how would i go about getting wireless exactly? also were would i be getting the signal from if i were to get the wireless?
 
Well i was about to recomend a access point however they are really expensive.

a cheeper way (which i yet understand) is to get a wireless router like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124010 This should be easy to use and you will just plug the line from your interent into the box and run the software and in no time you should be up and runing. (also you can get the same wireless router in many stores. it is very common)
 
yes, but if i get a router i will have to get signal from somewhere in order to have the internet? my brothers computer is in his room and it's in a spare out in the backyard, would i be able to get signal from that computer? there are a lot of walls (and a bit of backyard) in between. also would he have to get router also? as for the other computer which is in the house it is only connected via a blue cable which plugs straight into the back of the computer. im not sure how all this stuff works, can u please enlighten me please. lol.
 
Ok, well. the siginal part is hard to tell. it can i would say travel 25 feet inside with all the walls and what not so if the spair room is in that range it should work so you would only need one. Also all the other computers should be fine, the blue wire connects from what i believe to be a modem/router (a box with 4 or so ports on it) so you would just use the blue wire that the wireless cox comes with and plug it into the router. youre gonna have to explain this again, im not following:confused: lol. would one option be to just extend that blue cable somehow to my laptop and plug it in the side (ethernet port) ? because i probably wont be moving my laptop around much (then again it mught be pretty hard gettin that cable to my room and gettin it down the wall cavity). with the wireless connection i believe that it is further than 25 feet but then again how far is 25 feet? we use metres in australia, i believe, if my calculations are correct it is like 7.5m which is not far at all? i still dont understand how the router works...... also i think my brothers computer in the spare room out the back only has a modem, its just a black box with green flashy lights at the front, lol, can you pick up a signal using a router placed next to my laptop from that (again taking into consideration distance) ? i dont no if wat im writing makes any sense at al:Dl. after all how hard can it be to connect my laptop to broadband.:confused: ???? especially when we have 2 computers on the property already connected to it. i must sound pretty stupid i think:D
 
well you could just run a cat5 wire to your room, but if it is far enough it may be hard to do. I recomend wireless just because its almost plug and go and you dont need wires to connect. If you know you will not move around, then you can do exactly what you are doing with the other computers
 
ok, i think i'll go with the router. its just makes far more sense to do that then stuff around wth a cable. thanks for your help.
 
ok, thanks, i'll probabnly get that one. do you think it will meet all of my requirments? what are the things i need to consider?
 
well the only thing you need to worry about is to have all the computers that you want to connect to it wirelessly have a wireless adapter (your computer has one) but the computers that are already connected can still remain connected and you dont need a wireless adapter for them. Besides that, everything should be easy to setup. just follow the guide and run the disk.

ok, i just bought this router but i cant run the disk on my mac because it is an .exe file. what do i do?

do i install the disk to my brothers computer or to my mac:confused:

what plugs into my mac laptop and wat goes with my brother computer taking into consideration the setup we currently have in my house being that it is my brothers computer which with connected to the telephone line. whats the deal??

Without the router, the modem goes straight to your brothers computer?

If so, just keep the router in your brothers room. Have the cable running from the modem, and instead of that connecting to your brothers computer, have it run to the modem port on the router.

From there, youll have 4 wired ports and then wireless options.

Have your brother run from port 1 of the router, back into his computer. He'll be connected. You could run another cable from port 2 of the router into your laptop, but that isnt the most efficient way for you to be connected.

Your laptop should automatically see the wireless connection, which by default is called linksys. By default, the wireless settings wont have any security either, so you should be able to just connect right.

The 3 macs (2 wire to router one laptop connected to wireless) in my house didnt need to have anything installed, it was just plug in and go, and my pc didnt need anything installed either. Just plugged in the router and I was set.
 
currently we have 2 computers connected to the internet. one which is connected to telephone line and the other is connected from that computer by a blue cable coming from the modem. wat i am trying to do is connect my router to the computer which is connected via that cable. so wat i have done is stuck the blue cable ito the port at the back of the router and then from port one i have another cable connected to that computer. i intend for the 3rd computer (my laptop) to have wireless connection from that router using an airport. i have encountered a problem. when i run the linksys setup wizard on the computer connected via the blue cable i get to step 8 and a bar loads to 100% any then it asks me for a password. wat is this password supposed to be? ive tried everything i can think of and nothing works. in the bottom right hand corner the image of the 2 computers is flashing like it does when it is connected but when i go to use the internet it does not work it says 401 unauthorized. so first i need to fix this problem before i can get the wireless connection to my laptop.

wat annoys me is when i just have that blue cable which is coming from the modem next to the computer connected to the telephone line plugged straight into the back of this computer the internet works perfect. but when i try to connect via the router so that i can rout a signal out to my laptop it does not work.
