Connecting PC to TV using AV out (or S-video out)

I want to connect my pc to my tv. I tried using 1 single phono cable from my av out (pc) to my av in (tv) but nothing happened. I know you have to go to display settings or something, but can anyone give me a specific cable to use and some step by step instructions from those of you that have achieved what i want. Thanks for your time.

what outputs does your vid card have? i have an s-video and dvi outputs, i ran an s-video cable from my tv out to my tv and a pair of reg audio rca from pc to tv and works fine. you first have to go to your video card set up(mine is Nvidia) i didnt have the option to go to dual screens until i plugged the svideo cable in, so it must know there is a cable connected and update the options or something. So configure your pc for dual screens and there is also another setting to get full screen on your tv but i forget what it is. you want clone setting not a split.
 
Thanks, yeah i have av out and s-video and have nvidia. So what i go to diplay properties is it,what exactly did u do. thankls
 
Well if the drivers are not recognising your TV, you can force detection in the driver panel. It should be very straight forward, just read and follow the prompts.

go to your nvidia control panel and choose display options and the dual display set up wizard. your tv should be detected after you plug it in and go from there.
