Connecting to my PCs to a TV

I have 2 laptops, a Toshiba Tecra and a Panasonic "Let's Note." For quite some time I have been connecting my Panasonic to my bigger screen TV to be able to watch videos or my slingbox on the bigger screen and also to be able to use the quality speaker system the TV has underneath the screen. When I try to do the same thing with my Toshiba, I have never been able to get a picture -- only audio. The picture "box" is always black.

Can anyone advice me as to if and how I could rectify this problem?
 
when you plug the laptop into the TV you can right-click the desktop, select properties and choose settings. make sure the 2nd monitor is enabled, and set the resolution to one your tv can support.
