connecting to router with laptop

This problem is actually a friends, He bought a laptop running vista, Hooked up the dsl modem and all is fine. He wants to be able to move about the house using the built in wireless card. He bought the linksys router wrt54gs and installed it on the laptop which is the only pc in the house, but once he unplugs he loses connection and it wont pickup the router. Should he have not installed and would the wireless card already been able to read the router? He can pick up a neighbors signal but its secured. Thanks.

You have to turn on wireless connection from the router first, you should also know that wired and wireless are two separate connections... you have to connect again if you lose wired connection.
I suggest you tell him to stay on wireless connection all the way, and don't forget to secure it.
