Connecting two computers via ethernet

Hello,
I have my family computer connected to my router and my laptop and my computer in my sig connected to that wirelessly. I have got another older computer which i am running ubuntu linux on. I am wondering how i would go about connecting that to my computer in my sig via ethernet. DO i just need a straight through cable connecting both computers. Will the wireless and ethernet both work at same time?
Thanks in advance

I've personally tried a direct ethernet to ethernet connection, it didn't really work at all. I couldn't get it connected.

Someone had mentioned it doesnt matter if you use a cross over cable a while ago.. i cant confirm that though. When i do it I use a cross over cable Male to Male. The thernet card has the femal connection. This is called a direct connect.

ok Thanks for the replies. I've tried with a straight through cable but that hasn't worked. I went down to my local store and had a look at the cross over cables but there are lots of different ones. They have male a to male a, male a to female a, male b to male b, female a to female a. Doesn't it really matter what one i get. Sorry about all the questions but just making sure i get right one.

Not sure what you mean by "connect to the computer in your sig", but why not go through the router?
What exactly are you trying to do?

well the ubuntu machine doesn't have a wirelessly receiver init so i am wanting to connect that to the my xp machine (which is the one in my sig) via a crossover cable. I have now got one but when i set the local area connection up for sharing internet it gives me an error that 192.168.0.1 is already being used. I have looked and my xp machine is setup on the wireless connection has ip 0.3 on the end but prefered is 0.1. i can take the prefred away but then the wireless doesn't work. Sorry if it is all confusing. If you have any questions i'll be glad to answer.

Some ethernet cards will detect if you need a cross over cable, and swap the TX/RX over it self.

Other do not, and you need a lead which has a standard RJ45 to RJ45 but is connected internally differently.

On a straight through lead, 1 - 1, 2 - 2, 3 - 3, 4 - 4 etc.

On a cross over lead, the TX(transmit) on one plug needs to go to the RX(recieve) on the other, and visa versa.

Hey,
This is an update to the first post.
Update: I now have a crossover cable. I plugged it into my xp machine and got pop up that local area connection was plugged in. I then plugged in to my ubuntu machine. I was told i need to enable internet sharing on my local area connection. I tried to but i got this error.

I looked at my wireless connection and found out my ip on that was .3 at the end but the preferred on was .1
i took away the preferred but then it stopped working.
