Connecting two LAN's?!?

Hello everybody!
I have a LAN and so does my friend who lives about 200 Metres down the road. I want to be able to connect to his LAN and see his files, play network games etc. and have the full functions of a lan as if he were in the same building. I plan to use this message as a sort of Blog tracking my "progress" towards the achieving this.
So far myself and you guys have come up with the following options:
Any others would be greatly appreciated!
What would be ideal for me would be a system wereby I could go to any PC on any LAN, type in my I.P, subnet and DNS address, and access my lovely network. Is this possible and is it secure?
I have a "budget" of about -£79 and a few princely, shiny buttons. I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to networks so go easy on me and my feeble little mind or it will melt and I will be forced to make silly faces like this:
  :( :o
Which annoy me as much as you. Thanks again for any help, John

Install a couple of SFTP servers on each end, then both of you can control who sees what and who can see anything at all

My newlly found friend on the Air Force Instant messeging says:

Zach (12:16:56 PM) >> i would say, install a ftp server, more secure, and he can control what eachother see
Zach (12:17:05 PM) >> or a SFTP server

neither of your solutions are feasable, unless youve got about six thousand feet of coax... oh and some coax networking equipment, which im sure u dont

Wow Chip i may have to give you the smilly face treatment for that statement you just put.  :o

Righhhttyyyy then. So how do i go about setting up a SFTP? Will it offer the same sort of performance as a LAN? This Cantenna seems like a really cool idea, has anybody had any experience with it? Will we be able to have shared folders & play games ('Cause were geeks!) Thanks very much for all your help you guys. When I said i was a newbie, read = Complete and utter idiot. :D

Wireless. If you can wait a bit (end of 2005) a new standard calle WiMax will come out. It's range will vary between 20 and 40 kilometers. I think that's enough for you!

i think WiMAX will be a little out of your budget. All i know is that our schools are all connected together (which are miles apart) and they can share files just like a LAN. If you could hook up a WAN somehow, then that would work.

Setting up satalites for a WAN would be cheaper than WiMax? How can this be?
