Connection Icon in System Tray

Hi

Can anyone explain exactly what the connection speed means when I hover my mouse over the two screen icon.

I have an 8MBPS service and it constantly shows 7.6, which is fine but regular visits to ADSL SPEEDGUIDE shows me the true speed of anything between 1.5 and 4MBPS.

I've been told before that the icon is showing the network bus speed of the computer and has no bearing on the internet speed, is this correct?

I accept sites, time of day, contention ratio etc will affect it but 7.6MBPS shows whether the internet is fast or slow.

Usually the display shows the 100/10 meaning MAX 100Mbps across lan and MAX 10Mbps across Lan (internet). The 7.6 sounds a little weird.. is this a wireless connection. If so do you have full signal?

No, I have ADSL service called Karoo Broadband Max (up to 8Mbps). I use a USB Modem by the way which may have a bearing on my question.

When I had a 1Mbps connection and I hovered the mouse it said connected at 2.4Mbps  but I never got above the 1Mbps when checking with ADSL SPEEDGUIDE.
