Connection problem with certain sites

I had to do a reinstall of xp and am back up and running but having trouble accessing some websites while others I can connect to. I'm hardwired to a port on the back of my wireless router. I have tried to overcome this by connecting directly to the DSL modem but no success.

Here's what's happening; I'm using google as home page. I type in a search word and pages of results will come up. Various searches will open while others will not. A few of those that will open are dell support, hp support, a local church website, and NOAA river readings. Others that won't open by clicking the search result are AVG, Malwarebytes, Avast, and Adobe Reader will only install 50% and then stops.

I have installed the drivers from dell for this machine.

If there's other details I need to post let me know. I've never had this exact problem occur before, usually it will either open all or none.

Thanks for you help.

Sounds like you have a corrupt windows install. Try reinstalling again. Or you can uninstall IE8 and it will revert to IE 6 to see if the sites open.

IE 6 originally failed to connect when I finished the xp install, so I upgraded to IE 8.

I just finished running a repair on the xp installation and after that it went to avg and malwarebytes site for a few times. Then I began getting the error message "Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close" and that's all it will do.

I then pinged avg.com and malwarebytes.com and each sent and received 4 packets in milliseconds.

Does this give any clues worth pursuing before I plow up and plant over?
Thanks

What kind of browser addons do you have? Also usually when you can't access certain security websites, it means it could malware related.

I tried a few other things and nothing helps. I now have an xp reinstall underway. Will post results later.
Thanks

After I reinstalled xp the symptoms are about the same as I described yesterday...no success.

If the problem is not with an incorrect setting, is this possibly typical of a component gone bad like a main board or hard drive?

btw, I am posting this message from the gx280.
Thanks.

Do you have other machines on the network that can access these sites? I'm kind of baffled here myself. And you haven't installed any browser addons or programs before trying to access these sites after the fresh install?

Yes we have 2 laptops here that I did a test d'load from AVG and M'bytes with no problems.

What puzzles me is that sometimes it will open other sites thru google and then at times when I type in the first letter of a search word I get the message that IE has encountered a problem and needs to close. Then at other times it will go the the site.

What version of IE are you using? Some sites won't load using IE6. You will need to upgrade to either IE8 or use a different browser such as firefox/chrome/safari.

I haven't changed from IE6. That was on the installation disc, but yesterday I installed IE8 and tried it but the same thing occurred.

Like I said, I'm baffled. Can't explain this. Unless.....Possibly a filter has been set in the router for your IP address???? It's obviously not a provider/modem issue if other pc's can access these sites. Only other logical explanation is a setting in the router. Can you access the router?

I can but I completely disconnected the router yesterday and connected the computer straight in to the dsl modem and it didn't help.

The last thing I can suggest would be to download dban or kill disk to totally wipe the drive and install windows fresh again. If it still happens after that, then I would be looking at your install disk. Is it a genuine microsoft install cd or a burnt copy?

It is genuine Microsoft but from 2004 with no service packs but I installed all sp's after I installed the original disk.
