connection problem

hi i have been without internet for about 1 month now (i am using my friend's computer). My router and ethernet cable is fine and according to my computer, my NIC is working properly. Also the internet icon down on the taskbar shows that my internet is running fine when the ethernet cable isn't even plugged in! i do not know much about computers so i am in need of help! please help me!
 
welcome to computer forum (always wanted to say that). what internet do you have. cable/adsl etc. if youve got the drivers for everything, uninstall all the network adapters in devicer manager, restart the computer and re install them.

...like i said i'm a computer noob.....how do u reinstall/uninstall them? i have cable btw
 
right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manager. once there you should see list. this is of all your hardware. under network adapters it should have your cable modem and your ethernet card. right click one of them and click uninstall. if it prompts you to restart dont, wait til youve uninstalled the second device. then restart. once restarted it'll re install them, hopefully itll work, if not wel'll try some other things. good luck

i only have one thing under the network adapters....and it says that its the Ethernet NIC

uhh no IIIII personally have never installed it......
i also forgot to mention that the green light that usually lights up when u connect the ethernet cable to the computer doesn't light up anymore

is there only 1 green light? on most cable modems theres power, ready, usb/ethernet etc. if there is only one, then i would guess its a power light, in which case the modem isnt getting any power. make sure all the leds are in tight, if not it could be your power lead has stopped working, or the fuse has gone in the plug. if none of these work, contact your isp and explain to them what ha happened, they should provide a new modem.
