connection slow

i have a 56k modem. and lately it's only been connecting at like 14-16kbps
normally, it got 25-30 at the least.
and, it's also been to where i can only stay online for about 5-10 minutea at a time before it kicks me off.
i've already ran spybot search and destroy and spyware killer and got rid of everything that came up.
any have any other ideas as to why this would happen?

Are we talking your actual connection speed or download speed, if your download speed is about 16-17KB/sec I would consider myself lucky :D
Also how long has it been doing this

Maybe it's your ISP, if you can change the isp and see what happens to the speed, do it.

Another issue, don't get faked by the speed you connect at, measure the download speed, this is much more steadier and gives a better indication.

i am in the US
it has been doing this, from what i hear, for about 3-4 days.
well, also, i have 2 access numbers. one that is local, and one that is about 30 miles away(we have unlimited long distance). and no matter which one, it's the same. so could it still be an issue with my isp?
also, i haven't even tried to download anything. i tried to get onto here last night. took me five minutes to load the first page. tried to sign in, waited anouther 7 minutes or so, and it timedout on me and kicked me offline.

(i'm sorry ya'll, i'm not too good with this kind of stuff just yet)

Yeah I would put it down to your ISP as well, maybe try changing your ISP or better yet. Change to broadband it's faster and more reliable

open a command prompt, and type in "ipconfig /all" (without quotes). Note the DNS servers ip addresses and your own. Now type "tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (without quotes, x=dns ip address), and wait and watch. you should see a response back from each computer/server you hit. if you start seeing *'s, those are time outs and that's where your connection starts lagging. You can see from the ipconfig prompt that you will hit your ip address, then your ISP DNS. If you have problems hitting the DNS, you may want to have the phone company come out and check the local lines or see if other in you neigborhood have problems as well. If you hit your DNS fine, then your truely looking at a problem inside the ISP's network.

thanks byteman. i'll check that out later this afternone whenever i get home from work

and yes, everyone, i would love to switch to broadband. but they don't have it in my area just yet. i tried to get cable awhile back because my phone company offered me a good deal if i was to get a cable internet service started.
but, no luck
i'm stuck with the old 56k for right now

last night, i actually got connected at 35kbps. then, after about 2 minutes, it cut me off. then i got back online, and it only connected at 6.4kbps i think it was
=(

where are you spazz31585, i take it you in the uk. There arn't that many places left that dont have broadband access. And if you can get a list of names 50 people in your area that are wanting broadband then you can take this to BT and they will hook you. So i hear anyway

actually, i'm in alabama, usa.
a very small town
we have one stop light, only reason we have that is because it's at the intersection of two pretty good sized highways
haha
we gotta drive 30 miles just to find a mcdonalds

you've ben tea? what's tea?

it's kinda cool to live in a small town. not too much violence and crime and stuff. only problem is everyone knows everything about everyone
when i first moved here, i knew like 2 people. and within a week, i'd go to the grocery store, and everyone knew my name and everything

that kinda sucks

just thought i would let ya'll know i got it working faster again
what it was was i had another phone line running from the box out to the back porch and had another phone hooked up out there
disconnected that, and it all started working fine again though

don't know why that phone cord made a difference all of a sudden though, it's been working fine like that for like 2 months now

oh well. problem solved

thanks for all you're help everyone

i really appreciate it
