Considering a Netbook

Hey guys,

Anyone own a Asus EEPc here or any Netbook?

I was considering buying one for when i just want to browse the net, check my email.. and not do anything too demanding that i would usualy do on my desktop eg gaming etc.

This is the one i was looking at,It has an Intel Atom processor,8gb flash drive?

How are they?Is the keyboard good or too small?

Btw i would Wipe Linux off and install XP pro SP3,Think it would run well with 1gb of ram?

It should run good on 1 GB but if you don't mind a smaller key board then I would go with Dell mini 9 cause if you going to wipe out linux then it would be better cause you can get up to 2 GB of memory and I think it's worth it. But from what your wanting to do why not keep Ubuntu?

I've got an Acer Aspire One, which as you say came with a version of Linux on it, which I promptly replaced with XP. I'm also running Windows 7 on it too - which is even more responsive than XP.

The Aspire One is great in that it has a better (almost full size) keyboard, and a proper HDD rather than the slow SSD in the EEE. Overall it's not much bigger, either.

Got mine for £199 delivered from Amazon a few weeks back and love it to bits :D

I also have an Acer One and despite it's small screen for my bad eyes, it's a wonderful little machine. It came with XP Home, 160Gig HDD, and 1Gb of RAM and it works well. It even has WiFi!

nope i dont mind a small keyboard,i just want something thats not too big, easy on power (Battery life) and will run Xp pro okay.

Your right i could stick with Linux,But i just cant be bothred learning it all and setting up my wireless etc.

It would just be simpler for me to use my copy of XP pro SP3 i have lying around unuesed. :)

looks like the Acer is a better choice then,Langers2k7 where did you get yours for £199?
I looked on Amazon and the cheapest i could se was £204.12? and it says

3 used & new available from £204.12

well it doesnt say if that price is for used or new lol....i dont want a used one.

I got it on Amazon.co.uk and at the time it was £199 brand new with free delivery but I suppose their offers change from time to time. Bear in mind mine came with Linux not XP so it was the cheaper model, in Sapphire Blue.

I got my AA1 from amazon, 16gig version and it came pre-installed windows XP SP 2, updated to SP3. but sadly... today is the 18'th day and I think it died...

well that doesnt sound too good :o

I was looking at the MSI Wind too  Any thoughts?

Theyre quite a bit more though and dont want to spend more than £220...the less the better.

The msi wind is okay but the battery life is horrible, with all the performance specs turned all the way down it barely get's 3 hours. The acer are nice one though. And it's cool if you don't want to run Linux but the mini comes with all the drivers installed, So out of the box my wifi worked and web cam. I didn't have to do a thing. But if I didn't get a Dell I would have went for a acer, just my 2 cents.

I'm loving my Asus 900HA. It's smaller than the Acer One, and much easier to upgrade the ram (and has a higher maximum amount).

I've had an Asus 1000HA for several months but I'm thinking about selling it. It's a great netbook, but in all honesty it's very limited for it's uses, it's really only good for watching movies, browsing web pages when you're desperate, etc. I get so many messages saying that I should raise my resolution to see things properly, and using any type of app such as Photoshop is impossible because of the low resolution.

Thanks for your input guys,

Looks like i wont be getting a Netbook anytime soon if im laid off work next week

Will need to watch my spending now.

Thanks though,Who knows,Maybe the Netbooks will have gone down by the time i find another job :D

Really? I haven't had a single message saying I need a higher resolution. I also use photoshop and lightroom on mine and it accommodates those pretty good. The only spot in lightroom where I hit the resolution barrier is in the preferences dialogue, which can be worked around with some strategic 'tab' hits. I don't use photoshop very in depth, but it's been ok so far.

For an example of how those 2 programs do on that res on the EEE here's a crappy video I made

Ummm...to the British people here, no offense to the fake accent, I was bored :P

The problem is when I try to edit a RAW image, it says you need a resolution of 1280x768 or higher. Again the EeePC is a great netbook, but I guess I'd rather go with a 13.3"/14.1" laptop instead that's a bit more practical.

Ahh, I don't edit RAW in photoshop(I haven't used RAW lately). That's a little confusing that you need a higher resolution to edit a different file type...

It's mainly because of the RAW utility, since with all of the controls on the left and ride side there is very little space for the photo on such a small screen.

Oh right, there like a whole seperate thing for RAW in photoshop, right? I've only edited them in lightroom, never used Photoshop for that.
