Constant Application errors???- Please Help

I know this is the memory category, but I keep getting these warning messages, stating something? about memory. The messages are in a rectangular box, with a white colored X inside a red circle.

Just to quote one of them(of about 1 every minute or two), this one says

(In the blue bar at the top of the rectangle warning message, it says. . .

"igfxtrayWindow: igfxtray.exe - Application Error

The actual message says,

"The instruction at "0x77f58dc5" referenced memory at "0x0000854c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.

They all look something like this- all referencing "memory could not be read"

I already changed the RAM modules- but that didn't solve anything. So, at this point I can only think of uninstalling the Windows XP OS, and re-installing it. After that, I have no idea what else I can do- I already used CCleaner, but it did nothing? Anyway, if anybody knows what this problem is and how to solve it please let me know.

At first I thought it was the CCleaner, because my laptop is now starting to give me these messages, shortly after I installed CCleaner, but then I remembered that this desktop does not have CCleaner installed. Anyway, please let me know whatever you can. This problem is very annoying and worrying.

I forgot to mention, that this computer is also often freezing, needing to be turned off from the computer case power button. My Home page is always changing and there is now some programs that can not close on the taskbar?
Anyway, there is something majorly wrong with this computer. I started thinking it was some type of virus, so I downloaded Cyberdefender, but its not helping.

Problem Gone Away

Well,

I was told it was a "prank". My homepage was highjacked and just generally, I had some kind of virus.

So, I used the software from Dell, to uninstall the OS and re-install it, and now my computer is working more normally.

I was also told that this uninstall and re-install of the OS, is something that Microsoft recommends doing once per year. Well, I've got a lot of computers at my work, so i guess now is the best time to start learning about those little USB, finger sized data storing devices. God, there is so much to learn in all of this.

i reinstall windows once a year and i backup all my important things to an external hdd, But having said that if you suspect the problem to be a virus or spyware download highjackthis and run it then post it on this forum, There is alot of dedicated people who will look at it for you and tell you if its a virus or not, I say this because the only way to learn how to solve these problems is to listen to people who know, reinstalling windows at the first sign of trouble is not going to teach you anything, just my opinion.

Learning is what Im here for

Highjackthis. Mmmh. Vaguely heard of it. But I'll see if can find, install and run it properly. Is it just a program to detect and display virus problems or is it a virus killer/repair program as well?

While Im at it. What do you recommend as the best free Security Suite program?

At the moment Im using Cyberdefender, but Im tired of all the notifications. Plus I installed it at my work and I think the others will just "block" or "allow" every notice.

P.S. I need to learn how to do the back up saving thing. I need to do some sort of FAT32 to NTFS conversion for putting the separated hardrives on this Acer laptop together and I never save anything on my computer to an external media device? not since the days of using those 3.5? inch diskets from grade school for saving word processed homeworks? I like the look and seeming convenience of those finger sized USB saving devices. I heard they can save up to 4 GB's. A whole DVD can only store about the same, so it doesnt really seem logical to me that such a small USB finger sized device can hold the same amount of data as a much bigger CD/DVD. Anyway, if you can offer any good advice on that or link me to where I can read more about what options are available these days for saving data etc., please let me know. Thanks
