Hi there,

I'm about to buy a new computer piece by piece. I would like to hear some comments on the following combination. The Video Card is still a mystery for me but as my budget (and need) is rather low I think that I go for a rather cheap one.

- ASUS A8N-SLI SE, NFORCE4-SLI, Socket939, 1000Mhz Fsb, 4DDRAM, UDMA133, 4xSERIAL-ATA, PCI-Express16x, ATX, USB 2.0, Sound 7.1, GigaLan
- AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ Socket 939 (1000Mhz FSB) BOX
- DIMM 1GB DDR400 PC3200 TWINMOS
- HD 80 GB SEAGATE BARRACUDA UDMA100 2Mb Cache 7200rpm
- Hyundai 19" LCD TFT ris. 1280x1024 TCO99 DIGITALE L91A Silver

Thanks in advance,
ursinus

if i was you i would trash the monintor and get the 4200 x2, and what are you're uses for this comp?

Well, as I've thought to use my computer also for watching films I'll stick on 19 inches... But if you have some doubts on Hyundai in general please tell me; I could choose also Samsung or Acer.

Practically I'm about to use my PC mostly for work and surfing in internet... but I'd like to leave some room also for serious gaming (not first person gaming though); I'm speaking about Civilization, GTA, Championship Manager to point out some examples.

I would say that for this kind of use 4200x2 can be a bit too much (or too expensive). Or what do you think?

Thanks,
ursinus

well, even x2 3800 is good enough, only about $300

Unfortunately also USD 300 is a bit too much for my budget... But wasn't it that the processor is getting less important - at least compared to the times of 386, 486, or even to the era of first generation of Pentium? Tell me if I'm wrong...

Thanks anyway,
ursinus

PS How about memory? 1 Gb should be more than enough, right?

Low to me may mean a different thing than it does to you. What is your budget?

Why get an expensive SLI motherboard for a reasonably cheap system if you don't intend to use SLI? Dropping down to something like the Asus A8N5X would save you money to put towards a decent video card. A 7600GT would be good, a 7600GS if that's outside budget.

PS How about memory? 1 Gb should be more than enough, right?
Yes. Putting more into a system like that would be wasted.

But wasn't it that the processor is getting less important - at least compared to the times of 386, 486, or even to the era of first generation of Pentium? Tell me if I'm wrong...
Well, I certainly wouldn't say the choice of processor is unimportant. With gaming, however, it's the video card that is most important. With your other specified tasks, you won't be pushing the processor anyway.
