converting 20 pin ATX to 24 pin to match motherboard socket

Just curious, has anyone taken the extra four pins off a blown 24 pin ATX supply and tied them into a 20 pin supply with any success? I'm working on a project and was curious if this would work. I have replaced 20 pin supplies by removing the extra 4 pins on a 24 pin but haven't tried this yet. Thanks! :)

Yea I will have to go with "diduknowthat" on this one. Why not just buy a 20pin to 24pin adapter they are so cheap and you don't have to worry about messing your PSU up.

Well, I guess it will work since I had it up running and installed xp home. this is just an experimental project with some extra PC. components I had laying around. I've been into electronics for over 35 years home audio, CB, ham, and television repair etc. but, haven't been fooling that much with computers built a couple but, have lots to learn I'm retired and have my hobbies to keep me busy. Thanks! :) ps. wish I had known about the adapters though lol!

Another thing is most 20pin atx power supplies are older and most likely lower wattage, depending on the specs of the setup you may be overloading the power supply if it is a low wattage or cheap one.

It's just for short term browsing usage I have a TX 850 Corsair on order for install. Thanks! :) ps. The supply is rated 420 watts but, it is a cheap made unit of course.
