Is there anyway to convert dvd's to another format so that they dont take up as much room, but still sound and look like the original dvd?

DVDs are already compressed versions of film-based motion pictures. Occasionally, artifacts of the DVD's MPEG-2 compression are visible when watching a modern DVD. Any further compression would more than likely cut into bone, not fat, so to speak, and seriously wreck the image.

Convert to avi or matroska (mkv). It wouldn't be as good as the original dvd, but I've seen some avis and mkvs with very good quality. The crispness of the picture all depends on the bitrate. The higher the bitrate, the better the picture and the larger the file size.

The drawback, though, is that you won't be able to watch them on most standalone dvd players.

Try http://www.slysoft.com I've been converting my DVD collection to my portable DivX player and this is the best software I've found besides InterVideo, but they won't let you rip encrypted DVD's. AnyDVD removes any write protection that might be on the DVD but I havn't tried to use InterVideo after removing the encryption.
