Converting from XP64bit to Vista?

Hey guys, my plan is to be using Windows XP 64bit edition temporarily until I can get Vista, but I have a question:

How complex of a task is it to convert to a different operating system?

Anything you guys know about this process I would greatly appreciate.

What do you mean? Updating?
Or you mean how different Vista is ?
Well Vista is very different, great new functionality and facilities, and different from the inside (something you shouldn't worry about).
just a few days and you will get used to the interface.

The 64bit version of Vista should go right on since that is an upgrade automatically with the newer version. If you are planning to go with the 32bit release that could see some minor issues while a simple deletion of the current primary partition would clean that up. Even the 32bit version will take of that fast.

You cant upgrade from XP64 to vista, only a clean install!

And what did the XP installer do when upgrading from an earlier version? Delete the current installation and in some instances compress those files for later reversion. The Vista installer especially a 64bit version will obviously "delete" the current in favor of it's own installation. It may even now detect and remove a 64bit Linux distro?

When you upgrade it does not delete the current install, it overwrites files on it and the only time it will compress the overwrote files is if you ask it to.
There is no upgrade from XP64! to Vista

In the past you could upgrade from say, Win98 to WinXP, but keep all your files in the mean time. With Vista, you have to do a clean install, which will erase all your programs and files.

When installing XP to replace 98 on a 98/Fedora drive the installer didn't overwrite but deleted "all" 98 files. Later the Fat32 partition was converted from Fat32 to NTFS with the disk management tool on the primary. XP doesn't overwrite files like what was seen with the older Fat versions.95 and 98 on the other would overwrite itself if you were stumped trying to repair an installation of either of those two versions.

The upgrade from XP64 to Vista would obviously be Vista's deletion of the older version. RC1 promptly deleted the 32bit install on the second drive here when tried and left a "boot" folder on the primary. That has been a stubborn one to try and remove. "access denied" at every attempt even when changing the properties from hidden read only.

You finally figured that out? :P Even when going to reinstall XP the current installation is deleted during the process. But of course you? already know that. (hhhmmm... I wonder)

(Your) the one that said to start with, you could upgrade from XP64 to vista. You can not! Only a clean install!!

Upgrading Windows since the ME days has changed or have you forgotten that already? You no longer "overwrite" anything except when manually expanding a replacement file off of the installation disk during a repair! If you had used the XP installer itself you would have known that it already deletes the existing installation unless a repair install is being performed on the current.
