I have a CD giving a lot of information on cars spare parts etc. and to see it I have to put it in the cd drive. Is there any way I can install this on my hard drive? I have plenty of room for it and run windows xp sp2.

what kind of files? if your running it off the cd now i would say yes. just copy to the hd.

I know I can copy a page and print it but how do I install the complete cd onto my hard drive so that I can access it direct. The files are text and sketches of workshop manuals of certain cars. A lot of info. any comments appreciated.

same problem

It was simple with windows XP but the newer media system in vista makes it difficult, not even sure it's possible. I've been trying all day to add my home made music CD without any luck. Also having trouble with the "administrater" feature. If I forget to sign in as administrater I lose all my work, sometimes hours of video editing. This is the HOME edition, no administraters around here.

It depends. When you put in the CD, does a GUI window pop up straight away, or just a normal Windows folder, or nothing. What I'm trying to establish here is if it is Autoplay, with a menu etc.

What type of files..? PDF? HTML (webpages)? Some types of files may not work properly if you copy them, like links between documents etc.

If one of the latter two options happens then it just sounds like a CD full of data files. Its easy to copy then:

First up make a folder in 'My Documents', or wherever you want, call it what you want. Then pop the CD in. Go to 'My Computer' -> click on your CD drive so that it opens up the contents of the CD. Click 'Edit' -> 'Select All' -> 'Edit' -> 'Copy'. Now click into your new folder and click 'Edit' -> 'Paste'.

Hope that helps, Doug.

I'm not entirely familar wth Vista, but every computer will have an administrator. If you only have the one user name then that will be administrator. You can change the 'privelages' of any user in whatever Vista calls the Control Panel -> Users (or something along those lines). I'm not sure about losing your work, I'd start a new thread if I were you and wait for someone who uses Vista! Hope that helps, Doug.

Yes, the installation seems to have gone well Doug. Not exactly as you suggested but near enough. When I access the new folder now it brings up about 12 files, 7 0f them pdf. None of these can be opened as it says more software is required to do so. But I can open one file and it seems to give me access to the full cd. Maybe it can pull the info from the pdf's. Many thanks to you and the others for your help. I will know in the future if there is any problem in links to other documents on the cd. cheers wilson.
