Copying music off iPad onto PC (Using iTunes or not?)

As some of you may know, one of my least favourite pieces of software ever is bloody iTunes. Today my brother decided that he'd like to transfer all the music he has purchased on his iPad using iTunes to his PC so that he can copy the files to his phone so he can play them on there too. I've tried copying the music off his iPad using the iTunes software by going into File -> Devices -> Transfer Purchased Items. It copied all of the music but it's not copied it to individual files or anything similar. Instead I think it's done it as an iTunes library file or something.

Can anybody tell me how to copy music off an iPad onto a PC as individual MP3/M4A files. Thanks.

There used to be a great freeware (it's now gone payware to $20) called SharePod. If you can find an older version that should do the trick for you.

Not sure Jason, my son has an old iphone 5 I will try it when he gets in.

Have you already looked at this support page - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1209

Yeah I looked at this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848

My brother said it has transferred some of his songs but not all of them. I'll have a look at it tomorrow and see what it's done.

This is the number one reason why I hate iTunes. Something that should be so simple is made so complicated.

I'm thinking that I might need to look into setting up a sync folder with iTunes on his PC.

The songs you buy on itunes are protected, the only solution I have to avoid this protection is to burn a CD and then import it as an unprotected MP3/MP4 .

What are the files you got? .M4A?

I think so. I'll check that in a bit and confirm, but most music from iTunes is M4A it seems. I've had friends email me songs from iTunes and they've always been M4A.

If I'm not mistaken that stands for MP4 Audio.

So yeah, the only way I found was to burn the songs then import them as MP3 or other format you can use on your phone.

That's why I don't buy on itunes anymore, I buy CDs.

But I understand what you mean, it's freaking annoying when they use formats that are not universal, like WMP uses .wma for example.

You can rip CDs with WMP in WAV, MP3 or WMA. I use MP3 320kbps personally to rip my CDs using WMP.
