copying/writing to dics problems

Hi
I'm new to all this and need some help before hiring a 'professional' to charge me silly money for something maybe I can fix with your help (pplleeaassee):D

I cant seem to copy anything to disc, my disc drive reads ok. All it says when I do it is there is a problem. what do I do now?

Also my laptoo battery doesnt last very long as this used to be ok when it was new. Maybe there is a link here.

How old is the lappy? It's normal for laptop batteries to wear out and lose their ability to hold charge. Unless you're happy using the lappy as a desktop, time to get a new battery.

As for the burning problem, are you sure that the lappy is plugged in? Most burners need more power when burning than the battery can supply (or at least mine refuses to burn discs on battery). Do you get a specific error message? What burning software do you use?
 
Its about 3 - 4 years old. I always use it plugged in now so when trying to copy a disc its always plugged in.
How do I find out what software it is? Do you mean window media? There is no specific error message when trying to do it, could I look somewhere else on it to find the actual error.
Sorry, I sound really dumb about it all! You're talking to someone with no idea of technical terms...sorry!

an error says that the disc I attempting to use may no longer be useable. But i've tried 3 different types. Should I buy new discs to see if I can eliminate this as a problem?

3-4 years old... firstly, if the battery is the one that came with the lappy when you bought it, it's no surprise if it holds very little charge. Now, back to the burning problem...

What discs are you try to burn? Has this worked fine before, or did this problem start appearing lately?

How do I find out what software it is? Do you mean window media?

The program you use the burn your stuff. Do you do that in Windows Media Player? Or do you use a program like Nero, Easy CD Creator or something like that? What kinda discs have you been trying to burn? DVD Movies, Music CDs, or just normal data CDs/DVDs? What burner do you have (brand/model)?

the discs. I'm trying to write some photos to disc. I've tried using a CD-R and DVD-R.

It automatically comes up using the media player, i've got real player. But I thought you only burnt to disc when copying a cd. You can tell how daft I am cant you!!:o

Dont tell me i'm missing some software and thats why my photos wont copy to disc!! ha ha

No I have managed to do it before so yes it is a recent problem!

If possible, try lowering the burning speed to minimum (there should be an option for it somewhere that lets you choose something like 4x,8x,16x and so on, choose the lowest)

I hope some people would drop by and suggest some good pieces of burning software. I use Nero, that's the best I've ever used.

Oh and what's the make/model of your lappy? I assume you're running XP?

Not sure of the make, the model number is M510
