How can I find out whether my mobo is c2d capable? It is a LGA775 socket, but with the new c2d i bought it doesnt seem to work, when I installed it and turned on the computer all that happened is the case fan went really hard and the computer didnt boot. This is a rather old motherboard btw.

Not all LGA775 motherboards supported the C2d. Buut some did and just needed a BIOS flash to complete compatibility.

If you could get the make and model of said motherboard I could confirm whether or not it'll work.

If you still have your old CPU i suggest sticking it back in and downloading Pcwizard or Everest and check under motherboard or system info to get that information.

If you don't have the old CPU the name of the motherboard (or characters that could help to discover model) would be located on the PCB board of the motherboard.. somewhere.

The motherboard name brought up nothing, but from what I gathered from the chipset, it does not support a C2d chip. :( I suggest buying a new motherboard that supports the C2d along with the rest of your hardware (optional of course).

ok thanks. well i was kinda thinking i would have to do that. so what i was thinking was to get was new ram, and have that new processor, and keep everything else. will that work and is there a mobo that you would recommend?

Of course. :) But it all depends on your budget. If you tell me how much you're willing to spend on the motherboard (and the RAM, if you want) I could direct you to the best bang for the proverbial buck

Well I believe this is the motherboard:
Dell OT7787
Chipset- Intel i925x
Southbridge- 82801FB(ICH6)
Sensor- SMSC 7601
The 925 chipset doesnt support the Core 2 Duo's, only the 945, 965, and 975 support it. (As well as the P35 and some nVidia chipsets).

ok well id say about 200 would be about there... depending on what would be good for a few years and worth my money, but it definetly doesnt need to be top of the line. id like to have 2 gb of ram also. thanks a bunch for the help i really appreciate it.

Corsair 2Gb Pc6400- $105 ($75 after $30 MIR)

P35 DS3 motherboard- $95

Almost $200 exactly :)

The P35 Ds3 is a very good motherboard. You can be assured in it's performance and reliability.

According to this site:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/replace_motherboard.htm

Changing a motherboard may require you to format your HDD. This site gives you some options to avoid this so I suggest you try them first.

(also Newegg ships only to US, If you live elsewhere I can still help you, I would just need to know where for the appropriate site.)

Yikes... that guide looks like it is quite a ways over my head technically. Hmm.... I wonder if my motherboard is Pentium D capable.

This is a Dell system your wanting to put a new motherboard in? Good luck if so. Most of Dells systems are proprietary, meaning they have special boards made that will fit in ONLY the cases they sell. So buying a new standard ATX board might not fit.

Do your research and make sure before spending any cash.

to be honest, this seems way too risky as putting in a new mobo is waay above my tech level. so, instead do you know if a pentium d would be ok to put in?
