If I purchased a retail E6400 do I still need to apply thermal paste or w/e? There seems to be some kinda of thermal compound on the bottom of the heatsink but do i still need to get thermal paste and place it on the processor??

the thermal compound on the bottom of the heatsink is all that you need, seat your CPU then seat your heatsink over it and your away.

You can use something like Arctic Silver 5 if you want to try and reduce temps, probably only make a difference of 1-2 degrees though. If you decide to use arctic silver or another thermal compund then you need to remove all of the compound already on the heatsink.

Personally i say just use the compound already on the heatsink for now :)

Is the compound on the heatsink suppose to melt because it's not evenly speard nor covering all of the processor. It's just like 3 seperately spaced chunks. I heard somewhere that it's just a thingy that's suppose to melt over the thermal compound.

Yes, once it gets used and heated up, it will melt.

It spreads the second you seat it. That stuff on the bottom is soft until you burn it in a few times then it hardens up when cool and remelts etc.
