Core 2 Duo or Pentium D

I am looking into getting a new CPU. I found a 3.4Ghz with 2x2mb L2 cache, and a manufacturing tech of 65nm. It looks like a decent processor for about 165 bucks. But I was also looking at a Core 2 Duo that is about the same price and the same specs, but it only runs at 1.86 Ghz. Which would be a better choice? I'm wondering if the sacrifice in speed for the Core 2 duo would be worth it or not.
 
the core 2 duo will be the much faster processor. Dont put too much on the GHZ rating of the processor. The new architecture allows the core 2 duo to eclipse the pentium D for performance :)
 
Totally worth it, it's a totally different architecture Ghz is not everything it's not about how many cycles the CPU can do per second but how many instructions can be fetched per cycle.

As the other members have said, the Core 2 Duo would be the best bang for the buck. The Pentium D has a higher clock speed, but it also has a different architecture then the Core 2 Duo.
 
Well if it were to be over clocked it most certainly would beat it out, however, in some benchmarks the higher clocked Pentium d's out perform the e6300.
 
You can only compared ghz within same lineups of processors. So comparing the clockspeed within C2D's will work, but comparing ghz from P4's and C2D will not. But anyways, the C2D should be superior.

When it comes to non-gaming related tasks, you could say that the E6300 and Pentium D 950/960 perform similar. In some tests the Core 2 Duo outperform the PD, while in others the PD outperforms.

But when it comes to games, even the lowest Core 2 Duo outperforms the highest Pentium D.

E6300 performed better than Pentium D 960 3.6GHz on all tests.
In gaming E6300 performs better than Pentium Extreme edition 965 3.73GHz

core duo 2.. dontlisted to the specifications, well alittle bit. its usually faster than intel says it is . ive overclocked a slot 1 1990s 400mhz cpu to 550+ mhz... somehow
 
I am fairly happy with my Pentium D945 3.4 Ghz Dual Core Processor. It performs very well for me. But that said, I would swap for the core 2 duo anyday. they are just so much better.
 
Thanks for the help everyone. I'm definitely going to go with the Core 2 Duo. I'm obviously no expert on these things, but the clock speed just made me nervous at first, that's all. But anything would be an upgrade from my current Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz :) Thanks again for the help.

Except for the Pentium D 805, which may perform a bit worse at times :)
