Hey all basically iv got an option, i can either keep all my hardware and get a decent core 2 quad, i htink any will work with my mobo as iv recently updated the bios.

Or i can get a phenom 2, new mobo etc, however my current mobo is tied to my OS as it was an oem OS, so that means i would need to get mobo, mem, cpu and an OS

where as if i kept my current stuff i would just need a new cpu

My budget would be around the £200 mark and is pretty conclusive to be honest.

I may be able to deivate some what.

The set up will be used for gaming and surfing the internet.

Im looking for the best option for £200.

how does a core 2 quad stack up to todays cpu's? phenoms especially?

Would i be able to max out bf3 if i got a better gpu i would i seriously need a full upgrade?

I would say stay with your intel quad core and you'll need either the gtx460 or hd6850 according to the recommended specs on this page.

http://bf3blog.com/battlefield-3-system-requirements/

And it will not be able to run on XP for those XP users out there, you will need to upgrade to windows 7 or get a new system if your hardware is too old to support windows 7.

I have vista 64bit, should i upgrade my core 2 dup to a quad or just leave it as is, (i was a bit confused on what you ment)

And is upgrading to a gtx 460 really necessary or are they leaps an dbonds ahead of my 1gb 3870 x2?

Yeah, you should upgrade your duo to a quad, better for gaming. I'm getting mixed reviews on which card is better, some say one, some say the other. So you might want to wait for someone else to chime in on that.

@john, i had a look at hwcompare and it says that my card is generally faster than the gtx 460

Its all a bit confusing for me

Will my ffr2 memory hamper me much or is that fine for what im doing with it?

Also is there any where in the UK that still sells the q9450 at a reasonable pricE?

Gaming is more dependant on cpu and dedicated vram on the video card. I would wait on replies to see if the 3870x2 is actually better then the 460, like I said I searched online and was getting different answers.

If you are happy to use second handed, Q9450/ Q9550 would cost £110 - £140

New are over £200. Not worth

Im on quite a tight budget, and the cpu is going to set me back at least £110-130

Is it worth upgrading to 8gb of memory?, will it make my computer any quicker or anything i might notice?

nope, only video editing truly NEEDS 8 or more, almost every game works fine with 4, 8 is just to get that overhead and future proof since memory is so cheap at this time.

i looked at the 9650 on anandtech to the i3 2100 and it goes back and forth between which is better, and in gaming thanks to the extra threads on the i3 it stays even, but if you were to play a dual core threaded game, then the i3 should be better, but it would be better get a newer mobo so you could get ivy bridge next year or if you can afford the i5 2500k for 220 it will kill anything you can get now.

How will the q9x0's stack upto todays performance?

Will they allow me to max games providing the rest of my rig is upto it?

TBH I'd be going for something newer. No point in buying into a dead socket. AM3's time is almost up, too. I reckon either go sandy bridge or get a 990fx board and a phenom ii and wait for bulldozer.
