Hey guys,

My friend just got a huge chunk of cash for when somebody ran into his car, and he's really outdated on his computer, he wants to upgrade.

What we were thinking was a middle class core i7, running in crossfire x with 2 4870's or 4890's.

It will be for hardcore gaming mostly.

He already has a case, fans, and 2 hard drives, disk drives.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't get crossfire 4870/ 4890. Get a 5870 instead.

Core i7 920 + Asus P6T/ Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4 + 3 x 2GB DDR3 RAM

Case: Get something like Antec 900 if you crossfire. PSU - 850W

If you want to upgrade form the xfire 4870s get 5870 and price will be about 100 more or so.

5970 not worth the price yet. as 5850 in CF has beaten the 5970 up in benches.

Either CF 4870,4890,5850 or buy one single 5870

Here is some info and benchmarks, you decide. If you have 1700.00 to spend, spend it. Waiting is never really a good idea for PC parts new stuff is always getting released, do not buy something older or last gen to save a few bucks if you have the money to spend now.

I dunno. I think there's a sweet spot at the 5850 - where the greatest bleeding edge Technology is outside of what's necessary for 95 % of users. Yes a 1,700 dollar PC puts you on that edge - but I could never justify that for my own build.

I'd get the 5850 if I had a large budget. You could get every bit of use and utility ( recognizable speed ) out of the 5850 - and in a year upgrade to a faster Video card at the same price as the 5970.

Also notworthy - the 5970 is a HUGE card in terms of length. Will need a roomy case.

All nice cards, but I'd get the 4870X2 with an aftermarket cooler. Just can't beat the cost to performance ratio, $300 vs $600 . Just my .02...:P

Actually you can. 4870s in CF use less power than one 4870x2. Not to mention the massive heat the 4870x2 produces. My 4870s barely break 45c when gaming OC 820/1100. SO its buyers choice and you cant go wrong with either. But going with 5xxx cards youll not need as much power.
