core i7 vs intel xeon

so I was looking at mac pros because i was thinking of getting a mac but then at the same time I wanted to get a good processor to build with.
Looking at it I found that both sun and mac use intel xeon whereas other computers use core i7. Is the intel xeon better? I've read through arguements which say that Xeon is better than i7 for rendering film and stuff like that. It's more powerful is the argument. I want to know your thoughts on that. I know sometimes it can be a matter of opinion but I'm sure from a technical standpoint there most be a difference if they are not part of the same series. Thoughts?

The only difference is that you can run multiple Xeons on a motherboard--they're more for server/workstation usage instead of normal desktop computers.

Really, I'd get the i7 because I've seen it's a better overclock, better for gaming, etc... The Xeon releases its full potential when multiple Xeons are put together on one board.

Yea the i7 would be better, budget wise as well. My step dad has been working at apple for 30 years and I got to see those xeons. If you had the money to get the 8 core version, by all means go with that :D

8 core version? All the socket 1366 processors hyperthread, as do the socket 1156 i7 processors.

None of them have 8 physical cores.

Wrong, most people who overclock on air and water buy Xeon's because are rated to run at lower voltages, which usually a lower voltage chip indicates better transistors and therefore capable of higher clocks.

Dang, apple has only been around for 33 years.

^^ dont xeons have a core voltage of like 0.8v?
There is a range for them, the highest allowed vid for xeons is somewhere around .15v less than the i7. And yes, some do have vid's as low as .8v, and ive seen a few hit clocks over 4Ghz at sub 1.0vcore.
