Cores supported in modern MMORPG games

I heard many people say that the most modern games only support Quad Cores and down. Does that mean the best gaming performance results from the use of Quad Cores and Core 2 Duo Cores? Are Hex Cores really useless at this point of the gaming era?

I'm thinking of getting i7 930 or 950 for my new gaming machine. Will those 2 Quad Core Processors give best of the best performances for gaming? Is paying $50 more for the i7 950 for the extra speed worth it?

At newegg, the price difference is only $15 (LINK), so I'd go ahead with the 950. And yeah, I'd go with an i7 before a dual core. The devs are finally releasing games that support multithreading.

Microcenter is currently having a super sale for processors. They have 950 for 249.99 and 930 for 199.99, which are much cheaper than the price on newegg. So, if I bought a 950 from microcenter, I'd be paying $50 more than the 930. Would that be worth it?

Ah yeah, I forgot about microcenter and their sick CPU deals, we don't have them in my area unfortunately. In that case, I'd go with the 930. The only difference are the clockspeeds. You can easily overclock the 930 to 950 levels (and then some) if you wanted to.

If I was really thinking about a Core i7 930 Processor I would have someone trustworthy on the forums purchase one from a Microcenter for me. Pay them for the processor plus shipping costs.

But wouldn't I be able to overclock the 950 to an even greater speed? I think 950 has about .2 ghz speed on 930. Is .2 ghz not worth the $50?

From what I hear both of those processors oc really well. Like the 4GHz range with good cooling. I don't think that it is worth the extra $50 unless you never plan on overclocking.
