Corrupt Profile - How To Fix?

My mum has a desktop computer that is 2 years old. It has two user profiles on it because until a year ago I was using the desktop as well (I now have a laptop). A few months ago my mum had a virus that kept disabling her network card, so we downloaded a 3 month trial of Windows One-Care. It fixed the problem. My mum said she then reloaded Avast Anti-Virus onto her computer (I had no reason to doubt that she had done this).

Anyway, my mum has been downloading games from the Internet and storing them on her computer. No problem, right? Wrong! Yesterday she found out she couldn't get internet access, even though the status said she was connected. I checked all the connections, turned them off and on again, and everything was working fine. Then I logged off her profile and logged on to mine, and bingo I had internet access. Obviously what's happened is that mum has got a virus that has affected her profile. I managed to download some anti-virus software and did a scan on her profile, deleted a few trojans and worms, but she still can't log on to the internet on her profile. I guess the only thing I can do is add another profile, ensure it has administrator access, and then delete my mum's profile, but how do I do it with her Microsoft Outlook account? Can anyone talk me through the process? I'm guessing my mum doesn't want to lose any of her emails. Any info appreciated.

Do you want to try System Restore? If she had internet before it might be some "small" system setting that was changed by something. System restore would not delete any of your files, my logon just recently went all wrong/corrupt and system restore to a previous day helped - 5 minutes deal. Also try to run check disk with error correction (like when you menu when rith clicking on disk C: in My Computer). Hope it will help.

Tried System Restore but it won't let me sslect a date before my mum had her computer problems. It just says that the only available date to do a system restore for is today's date, which is not going to help. Or is it?

It might actually help. If something was installed and it created a restore point, it is likely that the problem occured after that installation was completed, or that restore point was created. Try and run that restore point and see if it works, because remember that you can always undo any changes that system restore makes to your computer.

Other than that, I would suggest that if you are using something like AOL which requires you to dial using their browser (unless you "reconfigure" the router), that you try a password reset on the account. Other than that, outlook creates a backup somewhere in the documents folders, but I'm not sure where.

If a restore doesn't work, download and install AVG free (http://free.avg.com/) and run a virus scan using that. If not, create an administrator account, browse to my computer, documents and settings, (name of mums user profile), and then copy all that. After a virus scan of course, to make sure it is not infected. Delete her old profile, and create a new profile (using a different name to ensure there is a different path), and then use the administrator account you created to copy all of the files back (my computer, c, documents and settings, (name of new user profile), COPY IT HERE).

That should work, but don't hold me to that. I'm not really sure whats happening for it to be only on one user account. Definitely get AVG though, it is the best I have ever used.
